Scientists have been the links between drug addiction and addiction to fast food. Now research regarding this issue have become more profound and new research indicates that junk food is linked to addiction to cocaine and heroin, at least in animals.

The researchers showed that the pleasure center in the brain of rats was over stimulated by fast food, having the same effect produced by cocaine addicts.

Eventually the pleasure centers are so saturated that every time they need more and more quantities of junk food to feel normal, according to Paul H. Kenny, professor of molecular therapies Scripps Research Institute.

Years ago, the idea of having to use a needle discouraged many potential users of heroin. Not anymore. Today’s heroin is so pure that users can smoke it or inhale it, allowing a greater number of youth under 18 years of use. Young people who snort or smoke heroin face the same risk of overdose and death than those who injected it. However, 40% of seniors surveyed believe high school to try heroin does not present a greater risk.

Recent studies suggest that there has been a change in drug use, heroin injected to inhaled or smoked, because the drug nowadays it is more pure and misperception that inhaled smoke it or not addictive.

What Is the Scope Of Heroin Use In the U.S.?

heroinAccording to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 2003-which actually may have underestimated the use of illicit opiates (heroin) – about 3.7 million people had used heroin at some point in their life, and more 119,000 of them reported having used in the month preceding the survey.

An estimated 314,000 Americans used heroin in the year preceding the survey, and the group with the largest number of users was that of those over 26 years. (more…)

How Is Heroin Used?

heroinHeroin is usually injected, sniffed / snorted, or smoked. Typically, the addict may inject up to four times a day. Intravenous injection provides the greatest intensity and causes more rapid onset of euphoria (7 to 8 seconds),

while intramuscular injection produces a relatively slow onset of euphoria (5 to 8 minutes). When heroin is sniffed or smoked, usually feel its peak effects after 10 to 15 minutes. NIDA researchers have confirmed that all forms of heroin administration are addictive. (more…)
