Alcohol and drug treatment centers have been around since the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, but at the time they were not called drug rehab center or alcohol treatment programs, they were called the Asylum and the disease of addiction and alcoholism (defined by the American Medical Association) was not seen as an illness or a disease at all. It was wrongly categorized as a disorder no different from schizophrenia or other psychoses, which is why many alcohol rehab and drug treatment centers have their roots in mental health hospitals and mental health treatment.

To this day, drug and alcohol rehabilitation rehab programs in hospitals are often directly related to mental health treatment and behavioral health treatment offered, or are combined into dual diagnosis treatment centers. (more…)

What Is the Scope Of Heroin Use In the U.S.?

heroinAccording to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 2003-which actually may have underestimated the use of illicit opiates (heroin) – about 3.7 million people had used heroin at some point in their life, and more 119,000 of them reported having used in the month preceding the survey.

An estimated 314,000 Americans used heroin in the year preceding the survey, and the group with the largest number of users was that of those over 26 years. (more…)
